Maison Roussarie
the history
of the jar
Do you know when and where preserves were invented? The answer is... in 18th-century France.
The confectioner Nicolas Appert invented the principle of food canning. He decided to use glass containers, as glass is the only material that can be 100% recycled. Before Nicolas Appert, the French preserved food in a variety of ways: brine, salt, smoke, ice or sterilize.
This was a public health issue, as food poisoning was rife! Glass preserving jars first appeared industrially in the early 19th century, with brands such as “Le Parfait” and “Le Pratique”.
Our jars are made with local produce in our Bordeaux laboratory.
We use no additives, thickeners or preservatives.
